Highbury Primary School has become the first South Australian public school to unveil a new inclusive playground through the Variety All-Abilities Playground Program, marking the beginning of Variety SA’s $2 million investment in accessible play spaces across the state.

Every child deserves the chance to play, explore and feel like they belong.

That’s why Variety SA is proud to celebrate an exciting milestone, with Highbury Primary School officially opening the first inclusive playground delivered through the Variety All-Abilities Playground Program.

The new playground is the first of six public school projects being delivered through rounds one and two of the program, which represents the largest single investment in Variety SA’s history.

Designed to break down barriers to play, the playground features a range of accessible and inclusive play elements that encourage connection, creativity, exploration and participation for children of all abilities. More than just a playground, it is a place where every child can build friendships, develop confidence and experience the joy of playing together.

A Milestone for Inclusion

The official launch was attended by Variety SA Board Member Peter de Cure AM, Minister for Education, Training and Skills The Honourable Lucy Hood MP, students, staff, families and community representatives who gathered to celebrate the achievement.

Peter de Cure AM said the playground reflects Variety’s commitment to empowering children to live without limits.

“One of Variety’s core values is inclusion, and this program represents this in action for all children, regardless of circumstance, so they can experience the simple joy of play equally.”

He added that the $2 million investment demonstrates Variety SA’s commitment to creating opportunities for children across South Australia to play, belong and thrive.

Minister Lucy Hood welcomed the partnership, highlighting the importance of creating school environments where every child can participate.

“We want all South Australian kids to get active in spaces where they can play, connect and thrive.”

She said more accessible school environments help students with disability enjoy outdoor play with friends while also supporting improved concentration in the classroom.

Creating Real Impact

For Highbury Primary School, the playground is already making a remarkable difference.

Principal Belinda Smith said the space will provide lasting benefits for students and the wider school community.

One of those students is Stella.

Before the playground was installed, Stella often spent recess and lunchtime quietly waiting by the school gate for her mum. Today, she can be found laughing, exploring and playing alongside her classmates in the new inclusive space.

Her mum, Brooke, has seen the transformation firsthand.

“Stella would always wait at the gate for me to pick her up every day. Now I have to go and find her because she loves playing on the playground so much. It is such a wonderful addition to the yard.”

Stories like Stella’s are exactly why the Variety All-Abilities Playground Program exists. Inclusive playgrounds don’t simply provide accessible equipment — they create opportunities for children to connect, build confidence and experience the sense of belonging that every child deserves.

Empowering Children to Live Without Limits

The Highbury Primary School playground is just the beginning.

Through the Variety All-Abilities Playground Program, Variety SA is investing $2 million to help schools across South Australia create welcoming, accessible spaces where children of all abilities can play together.

Because when children are included, they don’t just play — they grow, connect and thrive.

At Variety SA, we’re proud to help empower children to live without limits.
