Before You Apply

Please check if the item can be funded through NDIS or other services first. Variety supports children who have no other options available.

You may be eligible if:

Your child is aged 0–18 years, living in South Australia and your child is sick, experiencing disadvantage or living with a disability.

Applications must be received and finalised before the child’s eighteenth birthday.

Documents Required To Apply

These documents are usually easy to gather and many families already have them ready.

A medical letter

A letter from your child’s GP or paediatrician explaining their diagnosis.

It must be dated within the last 3 months.

Two support letters 

Two referee support letters are required.

A referee must be either a health care professional, teacher, specialist or support worker.

Proof of household income

Recent documents
(within 2 months):

• 1 recent payslips, and/or
• A Centrelink statement

If self-employed: your latest tax return or Notice of Assessment.

Two quotes for the item

• From two suppliers
• Less than 2 months old
• Must include GST and
• Must include delivery costs & installation if relevant

How the Application Process Works

Our team carefully and confidentially reviews every application. You will be notified of the outcome within 6–12 weeks. If approved, the grant must be used within 12 months of the approval date.

Application

Fill in the form, include all relevant documents, letters and quotes.

Assessment

Our team reviews your application to make sure it meets the guidelines and may request additional Information if required. If eligible, it will be reviewed by our Kids Support Committee then if recommended the application will go to the Variety Board for final approval.

Outcome

Every submitted application will receive written confirmation of the outcome of their application via email.

Successful applicants will be asked to complete a short survey to help Variety measure their impact. This will be emailed to the applicants.

Frequently Asked Questions

The letters should provide information to explain why they recommend the child would benefit from receiving the funding being requested. These letters must be dated and not be more than 3 months old.

No, Variety SA does not provide cash grants. Funding supports the purchase of approved equipment and tangible items. Payment will be made directly with a supplier, not to the applicant.  Reimbursements will only be considered in exceptional circumstances and must be pre-approved where direct payment by Variety SA was not possible.

Medical and health consultations, Communication devices for recreational use, School fees/salaries/wages, Ongoing funding such as repairs or maintenance of equipment or vehicles, Salaries or administration expenses, Carer expenses, Respite, Research, General and cash donations

No, Variety does not provide retrospective funding. Funding must be approved prior to the purchase of any equipment or services. 

Once your grant is approved, you have 12 months from the approval date to use the funding.

Committee meetings are held monthly. However, the full assessment and deliberation process may take approximately 6–12 weeks from the date your application is submitted.

A child must not have received Variety funding in the previous 12 months to be eligible.

Yes. If requesting more than one item or service, applicants must clearly prioritise the items within their application.

Applicants must be:

  • Aged between 0 and 18 years; and
  • Residents of SA, but it is not necessary to have Australian citizenship.
  • Sick, experiencing disadvantage or living with a disability. 

No, the applicant can only use the funds granted by Variety for the specified goods or services that the grant has been approved for. The funding is non-transferrable.
